Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and leads to progressive decline in memory, attention, and cognitive abilities. Since current medications have limited effectiveness and may cause side effects, non-pharmacological interventions such as Tai Chi can play an important role in supporting quality of life, reducing anxiety and agitation, and improving balance and emotional well-being.

A randomized controlled trial (Huang et al., Effects of a Modified Tai Chi Program on Older People with Mild Dementia, 2023) demonstrated that a specially adapted Tai Chi program can improve executive function, daily living abilities, and cognitive performance in older adults with mild dementia, including Alzheimer’s, while also reducing fall risk.

Joe Ferraro, medical anthropologist and Tai Chi instructor, works with a person-centered, patient, and sensitive approach, providing movement support that respects the individual’s rhythms, dignity, and emotional needs.
